Joseph has been fascinated with houses most of his life. After college, he lived in several apartments that shaped his idea of what a home should be. He found that a tiny studio in an Italianate villa and an apartment in Frank Lloyd Wright's Meyer May House shared elements that make a house a home.
In 1998, Shirk moved to New York City. He and his partner both worked in the fashion industry and in 2000, after having visited good friends in Tivoli, they bought a weekend cottage just outside of Rhinebeck. After winterizing and updating their hilltop retreat, they found they were spending more time in the Hudson Valley, and wanted a larger home, In 2006, they moved into an 1800's farmhouse in Hillsdale. The house is now their full-time residence. A few years ago, they bought the Arts and Crafts cottage adjacent to their property.
In 2010, Joseph pursued his interest in Interior Design, and received his degree from Parsons School of Design. His passion for design and architecture led him into real estate. When Joseph looks at a house, he sees two structures: the one that exists and the one it could become. He has been a real estate agent in the Hudson Valley since 2011 and truly enjoys helping cients buy and sell their homes.
